ABOUT MALARIA

Malaria is caused by a parasite that is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

Malaria Cycle

The parasites enter the bloodstream and travel to the liver, where they multiply. After a few days, the parasites return to the bloodstream and attack red blood cells, causing symptoms such as fever, chills, and headaches. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on the blood of an infected person and transmit the disease to others.

TIPOS DE MALARIA

Hay varios tipos de malaria, pero los más comunes son cuatro y están causados por:

Plasmodium falciparum

It is the most severe form of malaria and can be fatal if not treated promptly. It is primarily found in sub-Saharan Africa.

Plasmodium vivax

It is less severe than malaria caused by P. falciparum, but it can cause relapses in patients. It is primarily found in Asia and Latin America.

Plasmodium ovale

It is similar to malaria caused by P. vivax, but it is less common and is primarily found in Africa.

Plasmodium malariae

It is the rarest form of malaria and can cause mild symptoms over a prolonged period. It is found in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

There is a fifth species called Plasmodium knowlesi, which causes malaria in monkeys and, occasionally, in humans living near the habitats of infected monkeys. It is endemic in certain parts of Southeast Asia.

Each type of malaria can present symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and fatigue, but the severity and duration of the disease may vary depending on the type of parasite responsible. It is crucial to diagnose and treat malaria as soon as possible to prevent severe complications.
