Malaria outbreak update at Frankfurt Airport

Six employees at Frankfurt Airport have been affected by an unusual malaria outbreak, resulting in two deaths. The leading hypothesis is that infected mosquitoes arrived on a plane from an endemic area. Preventative measures, such as mosquito traps, have been implemented. The risk to the general population is considered very low. The Robert Koch Institute reported four affected workers in July, highlighting the exceptional nature of cases without a history of travel to tropical areas, which can delay diagnosis and increase the risk of severe forms of the disease. Malaria is preventable and curable with early treatment, but late diagnosis can be fatal.
